Book Review
Reflection
In general, how has Spanish 3 gone for you this year? (great opportunity to highlight the context of fully online!!) Spanish this year has been difficult. The fully online format and only being once a week made the class more difficult than usual. However, the online format allowed me to work at my own pace, which allowed me to learn more. Also with doing a quizlet provided by Jenny I felt like I was learning more words that I have before. I have enjoyed Spanish but of course missed having it in person.
What were the most powerful lessons you learned? (this could be regarding language, culture or about yourself) In Spanish the lesson that impacted me the most was learning about indigenous Bolivians. It was interesting and heart breaking to hear about the struggle they go through with money and discrimination. From the shoe shiners having to hide their faces to the lack of equality for women. It was very uplifting to hear what the women who own food stands are doing for their families and communities. As well as the women going into wrestling. It all broke my heart and I want to do something to help.
What were your biggest challenges? How did you (or did you not) overcome them? The biggest challenge for me was finding time to do the assignments with all that junior year entails. I did not really solve this problem but I have been trying harder and different tactics. For example I got up at 6am today-Saturday- to work on school. The whole thing has been very difficult but I am getting through it.
What were your biggest successes? For Spanish I felt my biggest success was growing in my ability to communicate ideas in Spanish. For example in my summary of the book I was amazed by how I was able to tell a story from words in my brain and not in the exact words it was told to me. Also just in general every day life I feel more able to communicate in Spanish about what I am doing or any idea really. It's not perfect and I definitely am not fluent but I am getting better.
What are your personal short term and long term goals regarding language learning? My goal for Spanish is to become as fluent as possible. I plan on trying to do duo lingo in the summer so I don’t get to rusty. I want to know Spanish to be able to communicate on mission trips. I hope to know Spanish for the rest of my life.
