What is Climate Change and how is it different than Global Warming?
Climate change simply is a change in a particular climate. It could be temperature, animal types, plant type, etc. For example snow in the Sahara or a heatwave in the arctic; basically, something that is considered “normal” in a certain climate-changing to something else. Climate Change is natural and has been happening since God created the earth. Global Warming is a change in climate in the direction of warming, except it's happening around the globe instead of just in one climate.
Why should we care about climate change, now, when it's been happening naturally since the Earth began?
In the past global climate change has happened in sort of a heartbeat pattern (hot, cold, hot, cold,-up down up, down…) this time though the human element of it is making our climate heat up too fast, so there's no time to adapt. Also making it so we might not be able to reverse from the upward trend. We don’t need to stop climate change but rather slow it down and decrease the human element in it.
Protect Snowpack
How does your project demonstrate your understanding of climate change?
Our project is about snowpack, the natural process of snow falling and freezing over and over creating layers (called snowpack); that melts in the spring sleeping into our wells and rivers. On the left side, you can see the snowy mountainous climate in its perfect natural ‘original’ state. On the right, you can see what it will look like if its climate changes from global warming. This shows my group's understanding and knowledge by showing you what it should be and what it's going to be if global warming continues, along with some evidence, information, and ways to help posted on our placard.
What was your largest area of growth during this project?
This project helped me grow more confident in my painting ability. I have always seen myself as a terrible artist since I was in kindergarten- but I won’t share that depressing story today. In this project, I was allowed to paint with the helpful guidance of Bella. I am kinda proud of some of the things I did and learned to do on our mural. I feel now that I can paint(ish) even if it’s not the best. However, I still hate art and don’t really like my art that much, so I still have a long way to go.
What was your greatest strength during this project?
I think my greatest strength in this project was learning. I knew almost nothing about the contents in the product of our project, I did know a good deal about the topic and talking to the public about it. The project product was a painted mural with a laser cutter placard. I never paint and I’ve never used the laser cutter. I learned a lot from Bella about painting blending and painting trees. I learned some from Lorelai about using the laser cutter. Even though the project was in completely unfamiliar territory I was about to learn from it.
